Fisher Cats lose when tying run thrown out at home plate

So close

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats had the tying run thrown out at home plate in the bottom of the ninth inning last night and lost to the Binghamton Mets, 7-6.

With Mets closer Jeff Walters on the mound and one out, Brian Van Kirk singled and pinch-hitter Jon Talley doubled to put runners at second and third. After a strikeout, Andy Burns lined a single to right field to score Van Kirk, but pinch-runner Kevin Ahrens was gunned down at the plate to end the game.

The Fishers (40-45) let a 4-0 lead slip away as the Mets (52-30) scored four runs in the fifth and three in the sixth. Marcus Walden (5-9) took the loss on the mound, allowing seven runs (four earned) in six innings.

Burns (2-for-5, three RBI) was the only Fisher Cats with a multi-hit game.
