Monarchs beat Pirates in shootout for season’s first victory

Monarchs win shootout

Tyler Toffoli and Brandon Kozun scored and goalie Martin Jones stopped four shots during a shootout as the Manchester Monarchs earned their first victory of the season last night, 3-2 over the host Portland Pirates.

Manchester (1-0-0-1) erased a 1-0 deficit with two goals in the second period, then survived after Portland – which was playing its season opener – tied the game on a power-play goal in the third period.

The Pirates took a 1-0 lead on the first of Tobias Reider’s two man-advantage goals at 13:08 of the first period. The Monarchs tied the game when Derek Forbort scored his first profession goal, with an assist from Linden Vey, at 4:28 of the second. Forbort then assisted, along with Toffoli, as Vey scored a goal of his own with 52 seconds left in the period.

But Reider tied the game at 2-2 with 7:32 remaining.

Jones finished with 25 saves.

The Monarchs return to action tomorrow at Providence at 7:05 p.m.
