A convicted sex offender from Pittsfield was driving on the wrong side of the road in Tilton on Monday when he caused a head-on crash that sent three people to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said.

Brian Gage, 33, was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated after the 10 a.m. crash on Route 3 near the Lord Hampshire motel, according to a statement issued by state police Monday.

Photos of the scene posted on social media show Gage’s Pontiac Grand Prix squarely in the oncoming, southbound lane. Police said 55-year-old Dennis Bourey of Sanbornton was driving the Chevy Trailblazer that collided with Gage.

Gage; Bourey; and his passenger, 50-year-old Patricia Bourey of Sanbornton, were brought to Lakes Regional General Hospital in Laconia for treatment of life-threatening injuries, police said.

Gage and Patricia Bourey were subsequently flown by helicopter to hospitals in Portland, Maine, and Boston. It’s unknown why Gage crossed the double yellow center line into the path of the Boureys, police said.

Gage was convicted of two counts of felonious sexual assault in 2004, according to the state’s sex offender registry, which says that he was homeless and living in Pittsfield when he last reported an address.

He’s been convicted of at least 10 crimes, the registry says, including robbery and reckless conduct. His last conviction was in 2015.

In 2007, police said Gage tried to stab an employee of the Home Depot in Concord with a screwdriver after that employee accused Gage of shoplifting, according to a Monitor report at the time.

No further information was available Monday about the driving while intoxicated charge against Gage. State police didn’t immediately return a phone call.
