The Insiders: We think you should pick this Mary Pickford film tonight

We always sort of thought Meryl Streep was Hollywood’s first leading lady. Seriously, didn’t they invent the Academy Awards for her, so she wouldn’t have to be the one to keep commissioning statues to put on her trophy room shelves? That kind of repeated expense adds up. Turns out, we were wrong, at least according to the folks at Red River Theatres.

The claim from that corner is that Mary Pickford, not Streep, was “the silver screen’s first leading lady,” though it isn’t clear if the silver screen they are referring to is the piece of tinfoil they used to stage some still-unseen original screenplays. Either way, Red River is celebrating Pickford tonight at 7 with a special screening of the recently-discovered film Their First Misunderstanding .

Aside from being the winner of what has to be the longest game of hide-and-seek ever (it was under the couch the whole time!), Their First Misunderstanding will share the spotlight tonight with Sparrows, another feature film, and the evening will include commentary from film professor Larry Benaquist and Christel Schmidt, editor of Mary Pickford: Queen of the Movies.

What’s more, the entire thing will include live accompaniment in musical form from Jeff Rapsis.

The event is being sponsored by the Concord Monitor and the Hippo Press. For tickets, visit

If you’re looking for musical accompaniment for dinner instead of a movie, head over to Hermanos, where Mike Morris will be playing this evening at 6:30.

Also tonight, the Concord Parks and Recreation Department will host an adult pilates class for those 18 and older at 6:30 at 14 Canterbury Road. For more information, visit or call 225-8690.
