The Insiders: Some romantic options to make this the best Valentine’s Day yet

Looking for that perfect way to spend Valentine’s Day with the one you love?

It’s not easy to pull off the most romantic day of the year. But with a little help from your friends at the Insider, you might just be able to make it the best one yet.

Sure you can play it safe and stick with flowers, chocolates and a nice dinner. Don’t get us wrong, it’s a great way to spend the night. But do you really want to do the same thing as last year and the year before that?

Why not spice it up and do something outside of the box? This could be the most memorable Valentine’s Day of your life.

So instead of telling you what to do this evening, we’re going to give you some options just so you can claim it as your own original idea. And if it doesn’t go well, you can’t turn around and blame it on us.

If spending the evening with strangers in silence sounds like fun, then the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center has just the thing for you. At 8 p.m., the 1942 classic Casablanca will be shown in the planetarium as part of the Discovery Center’s “Celebrate Valentine’s Day Under the Stars.”

There will be hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar, live music, science demonstrations, a scavenger hunt, night sky viewing in the observatory (weather permitting), and a chance for couples to have a souvenir photo taken in front of the 12 foot moon mural. The cost is $55 for couples and $27.50 for singles.

But if you’re even looking for silence from the film you’re watching, then the Red River Theatres screening of Sunrise, a 1927 romantic silent drama featuring Janet Gaynor and George O’Brien, could be the best way to go. There will be live music to accompany the film and it only costs $10, beginning at 7 p.m.

But if you’d rather take a nice stroll and look at some romance inspired art, then make your way to McGowan Fine Art. It’s the final day for “Love, Lust & Desire” and it includes pieces from more than 50 New England artists. It will surely bring some romance to the day and it’s free. That is unless you decide to buy a piece, but everything is less than $300

So now it’s decision time. All we can do is give you some choices. Just how well your Valentine’s Day goes from here is entirely up to you.
