Pittfield basketball’s Cam Darrah is in the High School Spotlight
This week in the High School Spotlight, it’s Pittsfield’s Cam Darrah. Cam, an eighth grader, was called up to the varsity basketball team this season. Being one of the youngest players on the floor doesn’t phase Cam, and he’s wise beyond his years – at least when it comes to movies. His favorite is Hoosiers.
Concord Monitor: What’s it like being an eighth grader and the varsity basketball team?
Cam Darrah: It’s pretty exciting being a part of this. We’re a big family, and they don’t treat me like an eighth grader. They treat me just like one of the guys, and they just make me feel comfortable when I’m around them.
CM: Do you feel any pressure knowing you’re usually the youngest guy on the court?
CD: I don’t feel any pressure. My teammates help me get through it if I ever needed the help or something. But I just kind of go with it and play.
CM: Was it a surprise when you got the varsity call-up?
CD: I had no idea. I just went and worked hard. It just paid off, I guess.
CM: Did you make any adjustments for your transition to the varsity team?
CD: It was a big difference, but it was worth all the late nights and playing as hard as I can.
CM: What’s it like being able to play for Dad (Pittsfield Head Coach Jay Darrah)?
CD: It’s fun. He pushes me, but it gets me better. He probably pushes me more than anyone else, but it’s worth it. I like it. It motivates me more.
CM: What’s one thing about basketball that would surprise people?
CD: Probably the love of the game. Just being part of a big family. Everyday you just go and work hard and be with the people that you’re always with – on and off the court.
CM: When you’re not on the court where can we find you?
CD: I’m almost always playing basketball, but if not I’m usually playing some other sport like soccer or baseball. Or just relaxing and hanging out with friends.
CM: What’s your favorite class?
CD: Favorite class would probably have to be science. Because I’d rather be doing hands-on things, not just reading a book. I hope Mr. Shawver is watching this.
CD: My favorite food would probably have to be like chicken tenders or something from a local pizza place.
CD: My favorite song would be “We Own It,” from the Fast and Furious soundtrack because I listen to it before every game, and it usually just pumps me up.
CD: My favorite sports movie is probably like Hoosiers because it’s about a small town that plays and competes against bigger schools and wins, and ends up winning the state championship.
CM: Do you have a shout-out for anyone?
CD: Shout out to my family. My mom, dad and sister. And my basketball family for always being there – on and off the court.
CM: Any parting words?
CD: I guess I’ll just leave you with one of my favorite quotes:
“Hard works beats talent when talent fails to work hard.”
