The Insiders: Carnival food and sanctioned people crashing sounds like a fun Saturday to us

There will probably be plenty of people crashing into each other at the Concord Kiwanis Fair all weekend long, thanks to dizzying rides – and maybe to unsteady legs after inhaling inhumane portions of carnival grub. But today you can step inside the Everett Arena to see sanctioned situations in which people crash into other people, as the Granite State Roller Derby is hosting a doubleheader as part of the weekend festivities.

The bouts will begin at 5 p.m. and will feature the Granite State Legislashers vs. Central N.Y. Roller Derby and the Demolition Dames vs. the Fighting Finches. Tickets are just $10, or free if you’re 9 and younger, and can be purchased in advance at brownpapertickets.com or at the door this afternoon.

We were going to do a school essay-style comparison of the roller derby and the Ferris wheel, until we realized the only thing they have in common is both take place in a circle. There are no angry women on roller skates chasing each other down and slamming into each other on the Ferris wheel, at least not most of the time.

If you’re a Ferris wheel fan, though, today is your chance to save some money on your favorite ride – there will be a pay-one-price ride special from noon to 5 p.m. today. If you can find one of the fair’s neon green posters somewhere, you can save $3 more on the pay-one-price deal, too (we just put our poster on eBay. We’re hoping for a couple grand).

There’s more than fried dough and people pancaking each other on the docket today, though. The United Church of Penacook is hosting its Spring Fling Yard Sale at 9 a.m. at 21 Merrimack St. in Penacook. Don’t let the rain stop you, either – this event will be at least partially held inside Fellowship Hall.

The Unitarian Universalist Church at 274 Pleasant St. is also holding a Spring Plant and Book Sale featuring flowers and vegetables, as well as used books and other yard sale items. The event begins at 9 a.m., and there will be lunch in the UU cafe.
