The Insiders: Check out the Contoocook River with the Penacook Historical Society
It’s a Saturday in July so naturally you’re looking for something to do outside. That’s unless you hate beautiful weather and in that case we’ve got nothing for you except a recommendation to crank the air conditioner to high, pull the shades and watch Christmas movies.
But if a nice walk along the lower portion of the Contoocook River sounds like a good way to start your day then you sure are in luck. And no matter how hot it is, don’t jump in. Save that for when learning time is over.
Carol Foss of the Penacook Historical Society will be your tour guide, taking you along the south bank of the northern flowing river beginning at 10 a.m., where you can see many historic mill sites along the way. And if just seeing the mills isn’t enough, then stick around because at 1 p.m., Foss will give you an even closer look at the history or water-powered mills and their successors of the lower Contoocook. Those interested should meet at the Penacook Historical Society, 11 Penacook St. For more information, visit alongtheriver.org.
