Alex Morgan and . . .
Could this be the next great sports couple, pursued by the paparazzi, shown on TV feeding each other popcorn at Fenway Park, chatting with Whoopi and the girls on The View?
Give it time. It’s been less than 48 hours since the Merrimack Valley High junior was bold enough to ask Morgan, a soccer star and sex symbol, to his prom, via YouTube.
The idea came from a Los Angeles teen named Jake Davidson, who failed recently in his bid to escort Kate Upton to the prom after asking the
Sports Illustrated swimsuit
cover girl through his own video.
At first, Upton said maybe, by phone on national TV, with Davidson on screen.
Then, earlier this week, she said she was too busy.
Let’s hope our boy has more luck.
“I watched his video asking her and thought I could be a lot funnier than he was,” Peick said yesterday, moments before taking the field for baseball practice. “I could make a better video, and I thought Alex Morgan would be the perfect candidate for that.”
Morgan is in the category of tennis star Maria Sharapova, combining athletic greatness with fashion-model appeal (check the 2012 Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue).
She’s an Olympic gold medalist, a record-breaking goal scorer and a former Soccer Female Athlete of the Year. But there’s more. Add her degree in political economy from UC Berkley and her work with children, and Morgan is fast becoming a corporate sponsor’s dream.
“I just think she’s obviously very beautiful, a great athlete, everything I’ve seen about her, she just seems like a great person overall,” Peick said. “I have seen news pieces and YouTube videos where she’s helping kids. I watched a lot of U.S. soccer videos, and I saw her putting on a clinic at the White House and I thought that was really cool.”
So what does this 17-year-old high school junior have to offer a woman that every male in the world wants to date?
Well, he’s the starting catcher on the baseball team and – buckle your seatbelt, Alex – co-captain of his school soccer team.
He volunteers for a unified basketball program, working with mentally and physically challenged kids to raise their self-esteem and confidence.
He gets A’s and B’s in school.
He’s loyal as Lassie to his friends, according to his mother, Terri.
A good boy, too.
“A very compassionate kid,” Terri says. “He loves his friends, he works hard with school, and he works hard with his sports. He is family oriented, friend oriented.
“Of course, you’re talking to his mother.”
Okay, let’s allow his video, posted Thursday, to do some of the talking. It’s already the talk of Merrimack Valley High, with over 700 views as of lunchtime yesterday.
In it, you’ll find the story of a young man from Penacook who lists numerous reasons that he and Morgan would fit like a hand in a goalie’s glove.
“Now before you turn this off as just another desperate kid just trying to look for a really hot prom date,” Peick begins, while kicking a soccer ball, “I’d like to give you a few reasons why you should go with me.”
She should go with him, we learn through images and words, because he works out, just like Morgan does, although he was quick to point out yesterday that he benches far more than the 55 pounds he’s shown lifting in the video.
“I do 135,” Peick said.
Morgan also should go to the MV prom with Peick because he wears Nike sneakers and socks, and Morgan has an endorsement deal with the company; because Peick has been mentioned in the sports pages of his local paper and “you’ve been in a few newspapers I’m sure in your time;” because “You’re an all-American athlete and I’m an all-state athlete;” and because the end of the video, showing Peick in the astronaut suit his brother once wore at space camp, is hilarious.
“I think the video is good enough to reach out to her and accomplish what I want,” Peick said yesterday.
He also paused when asked if any female celebrity came close to measuring up to Morgan in his mind. “Not really,” Peick said. “If there has to be a second, it would have to be Jessica Alba.”
So now we wait.
The prom is May 18.
Tiger and Lindsey.
David and Posh.
Morgan and Peick?
“Haven’t heard anything yet,” he said.
