The Insiders: Prepare for a blooming good time in Concord
Spring has officially sprung in Concord – boy-yoy-yoing! There are a couple blooming great events today to kick the season off in style. First off, it’s time to get down and dirty at the Concord City Auditorium. Split up some of your favorite perennial plants and bring them to the Audi for the 13th annual perennial exchange. Swap your crop with other Concordians and bring home a bunch of new varieties. We’re told that the event will feature an appearance by master gardener Dr. Splat (where was he for the Insider’s comic book issue last week?). Now the only question is what kind of garden do you want to have? A savage garden? A secret garden? The possibilities are as limitless as that terrible Bradley Cooper movie. No one man should have all those flowers! The exchange runs from 8 a.m. to noon at the Concord City Auditorium (2 Prince St.). For more information, visit concordcityauditorium.org or call 225-7474.
After you’ve replanted your patch with a mix-and-match, head down to the Concord Co-op for the Spring Into Healthy Living Fair. This annual event will once again shut down South Main Street, so you may want to steer clear if you’re not attending. But why wouldn’t you? The fair boasts free food and drink (burgers, dogs, cookies, wine and beer for starters) as well as tons of cool, hands-on exhibits and activities. Children have a chance to ride on furry Highland cattle (if you’ve never seen one of these, picture a shirtless, slightly less hairy Robin Williams), check out the cute critters at the petting zoo and take a gander at some slithery snakes. Plus, face-painting, henna tattoos, meet your local farmers and more! The event runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, visit concordfoodcoop.coop.
Finally, two new exhibits open today at the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center. “Sustainable Choices” is a great way to learn about how your decisions affect not just you, but our living planet as well. It will almost make you think twice about lighting your double-bagged Styrofoam to-go container on fire and then throwing it out the window of your Hummer! “Expedition: Earth” showcases the very different worlds that are Earth’s biomes; specifically the grassland (complete with buffalo!) and the tundra (polar bears!). Bonus: The first 100 guests get a free polar bear toy! The Discovery Center is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m today. For more information, visit starhop.com.
