The Insiders: Hip-hop, blues, rock, soul and country – five musical food groups for your Friday night

Your hip-hop dance skills are no doubt legendary in that you’re a legend on the dance floor in your own mind. Not that we’ve visited the dance floor in your mind. Have we? Anyway, let’s talk about a dance floor that exists in this reality and is about to be full of talented youngsters, because Concord High School will play host to a Hip-Hop Multicultural Dance Show tonight beginning at 6.

Shamecca Brown first started a dance program at Rundlett Middle School, now called Vibes of Style Dance Crew, in 2008 and attracted seven students. The program now features 54. That’s like a million percent increase. She has since added dance classes at Abbott School and Concord High School, and tonight is the first time she’s incorporated all three dance crews into one performance.

Brown’s focus has always been to educate the students about different cultures and traditions through dance. And now you’re the lucky recipient, as a diverse performance is about to flood your senses with plenty of sweet moves and no Hammer pants. We had a chance to check out one of Brown’s sessions during Rundlett’s after-school program a few months ago, and trust us – you don’t want to miss this. We have a feeling she knows how to put on a show.

Tickets for the show are $5. For more information, call 892-9251.

Dusty Gray will feature significantly less hip-hop in his show tonight, but that’s mostly because he’s a blues, rock, soul and country artist. His stylings will be taking the stage at Bow High School tonight at 7 as he performs a concert to support the kids at the Concord Boys & Girls Club. Gray will be on hand after the show to sign CDs, which for the uninitiated or those under the age of 15 are little round discs that played music before iPods. Tickets are $5 for students or $7 for adults.
