The Insiders: Watch Concord High School take a swing at softball superiority

If you haven’t been paying attention over the last nine years, there’s a lot you’ve probably missed. Mark Zuckerberg is no longer a skinny, baby-faced, hoodie-clad college dropout; instead, he’s a skinny, baby-faced, hoodie-clad billionaire. And Johnny Depp isn’t weirding people out with his performance as Willy Wonka; he’s weirding people out with his performance as Johnny Depp.

But you’ve also missed the Concord softball team’s remarkable run through Division I. The Tide have reached the final four eight times in those nine years, including this spring, thanks to a 3-2 victory over two-time defending champion Alvirne on Saturday. (Missed mascot opportunity: Alvirne Alpacas).

That run has included two state titles – 2005 and 2009 – and the quest for a third remains alive tonight, when the Tide square off with No. 4 Salem at 7 p.m. at Southern New Hampshire University. (Missed mascot opportunity: Salem Alpacas).

Concord entered the playoffs as the No. 1 seed after a 16-2 regular season that included a 2-0 triumph over the same Salem squad it’ll see tonight. The Tide is no stranger to payback, having avenged season-ending losses in each of the last two campaigns with Saturday’s win over Alvirne, so they’ll no doubt be ready for Salem’s attempt at revenge tonight. Let’s just hope they remember: Revenge is a dish best served in a tiny upside-down batting helmet from the concession stand.

Also tonight, Glenn Paladino plays at Hermanos Cocina Mexicana at 6:30. Just as a primer, hermano is Spanish for brother, and Paladino isn’t Spanish for anything. If you want to stretch your mind after bending your ear – no spacers required – then swing on down to the Barley House at 8 p.m. for the weekly Trivia Night. Quick disclaimer: You don’t actually get any points for correctly answering “Can I get you a drink?”
