The Insiders: Tonight’s movie event is a slam dunk – ahem, we mean ‘Salaam Dunk’

There’s nothing like Matt Bonner playing in the NBA Finals to pique Concord’s interest in basketball. That means the timing couldn’t be better for tonight’s special Red River Theatres event. It’s a slam dunk!

Ahem, excuse us – it’s Salaam Dunk, a new documentary about an Iraqi women’s college basketball team. It’s a fascinating look at what it’s like to be a woman in modern-day Iraq; attending college as a woman is surprising enough, and playing a sport is even more unheard of. Some of these ballers had never even been running before they got to college and joined the basketball team.

If you’ve ever wanted to see basketball played in long pants and head scarves, this is the film for you. A discussion with Southern New Hampshire University professor Catherine Rielly and SNHU sports management lecturer Corri Wilson will follow the film, which starts at 7 p.m. The showing is free but preregistration is required; visit for more information.

Finally, some corrections to mistakes we made in last week’s columns. First of all, Dwayne Wade is a veteran shooting guard for the Miami Heat, not the main character of NBC’s A Different World. In fact, that show has been off the air for 20 years. Second, we reported that there were three new frozen yoga studios opening in Concord as a response to the popularity of hot yoga; actually, three frozen yogurt shops are opening. And finally, Russian President Vladimir Putin did not record four tackles, 1.5 sacks and an interception while playing safety for the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVIII, as we reported last week. We’ll try to do better this week.
