The Insiders: Go up the river with a paddle with Five Rivers

We’re not sure if you’ve noticed, but it’s been a tad on the warm side lately. In fact, a quick check of the National Weather Service’s official lower-back sweat index indicates temperatures officially peaked at “the-heck-with-this” levels sometime Friday afternoon. So what’s the forecast for today? Boats! With a 90 percent chance of having a fantastic time.

Cool off with a paddle trip on the Merrimack River, promoted by Five Rivers Conservation Trust, Merrimack County Savings Bank and Quickwater Canoe & Kayak. The trip begins this morning at 11:30 at one of two locations: County Farm in Boscawen, at the start of a 10-mile route, or in Welch Park in Concord to begin a 5-mile route. The takeout for both will be at Quickwater location on Hannah Dustin Drive from 2 to 5 p.m. After the takeout, we recommend ordering takeout. But probably not from the Quickwater location (unless you like river sushi).

Are you gonna need a bigger boat? Quickwater Canoe & Kayak will rent you one – and life jackets, paddles and any other necessary equipment – and 50 percent of the rental price will be donated to Five Rivers. Otherwise the event is free, though contributions at check-in are, of course, appreciated. Participants can also bring their own boat; either way, each paddler is responsible for securing his or her own river ride.

There will be check-in tables at each put-in location from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. For more information, visit or call Jay Haines at 225-7225.

If you feel more comfortable on terra firma, find the nearest kayak valet (unmined business opportunity!) and make a stop at Hermanos tonight to hear Eric Chase, beginning at 6:30.
