The Insiders: An Evening En Blanc and a day of rocks (oops, we mean minerals!)

Concord’s been home to flash mobs, cash mobs and scores of other awesome spontaneous come-togethers recently. Today, there’s another event in the same vein – but with an original twist! Evening En Blanc is a fundraising event for Concord Hospital’s Family Health Centers. It’s a fun picnic in the park at which all the attendees will be clad entirely in white. Sounds cool enough as is, but get this – the location is a secret until two hours before the event! At 4 p.m. today, the location will be announced on Concord Hospital’s Facebook page and website ( At that point, diners will scramble to get themselves (and their picnic baskets) to the spot by 6 p.m. for an evening of dining, dancing and entertainment. Tickets are $45; you can get them and more information at

Breaking Bad’s Hank Schrader has been locked in a constant hunt for Heisenberg the past few years, but we think he would take the time out of his busy DEA schedule and stop by Everett Arena today for the annual Gem, Mineral and Jewelry Show (whatever you do, do not call them rocks). See all the geodes you can shake a geode at and take something home for yourself! Entry is $5; kids 12 and under are free with adult supervision. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow. For more information, visit

The Monitor Insiders reported that Concord’s evening en blanc has an original twist. Not so. Dinner en Blanc originated in Paris 25 years ago and has spread to 18 countries since then. One of the hallmarks of this mob dinner is that the location has always been kept secret until 2 hours before the event starts. Last year we were fortunate enough to be in Montreal when we saw 5,000 people turn out for their Dinner en Blanc event at the Palace d’Arts on St. Catherine Street. (This year there were 4800 people on a waiting list.) We were once again in Montreal during their Dinner en Blanc this summer, but were unable to determine the location before the event. The secrecy surrounding the event is quite amazing. Here’s what the web site for the Montreal event has to say about the dinner: "What makes the Dîner en Blanc so popular is that it’s a “distinct” evening. There are no sponsors, no political or ideological agendas. Le Dîner en Blanc is simply a friendly gathering whose sole purpose is to experience a magical evening, in good company, in an environment which is both unusual and extraordinary." The only difference between Concord’s Dinner en Blanc and the original is Concord is using it as a fund raiser. Bon appetit!
