Napoli, Middlebrooks share AL Player of the Week honors
For their roles in helping the Red Sox win two out of three games against the Detroit Tigers and three out of four games against the New York Yankees, Will Middlebrooks and Mike Napoli were both named American League Players of the Week yesterday.
Napoli led all Major League hitters with a .476 average and a 1.143 slugging percentage during the week. He also hit four home runs, drove in nine runs and posted a .577 on-base percentage.
Middlebrooks also had four homers and nine RBI, and batted .464 while scoring eight runs. He led the majors in hits and total bases over that span.
Both players had big days at the plate during a 20-4 victory over the Tigers. They each doubled and homered in that game, combining for six RBI as Boston homered eight times, its highest homer output since July 4, 1977.
Against the Yankees the next day, Middlebrooks went 2-for-5 with a home run and two runs scored, while Napoli had two hits and an RBI in a 9-8 win. One day later, Napoli went 3-for-3 with a grand slam and a double, and Middlebrooks went 2-for-5 at the plate with a home run and two runs scored in a 12-8 win.
