The Insiders: Some light fun to usher in December

Apparently, it’s December. That’s the word on the street, anyway. Thankfully, December is our favorite month that ends in “ecember.” It features so many of our favorite things – frigid temperatures that threaten to frostbite your fingertips, salt stains to decorate the side of your car and darkness encroaching approximately 25 minutes after sunrise. Oh, sorry, that’s the wrong list. Ah, here’s the list of Decembery things we like: Christmas!

So why wait to start spreading some yuletide cheer? Today is the second annual tree lighting and caroling event held by the East Concord Garden Club at Pecker Memorial Park at 4:30 p.m. Catch the tree lighting to get you in the Christmas mood, and stay for hot cocoa following the festivities across the street at the East Congregational Church. Just look both ways before crossing the street, though, and bring a designated driver if you’re going to have more than two cups of cocoa.

Kenny Rogers loves Christmas, too. How do we know? We don’t, at least not for sure. But Kenny Rogers Christmas is tonight at 7:30 at the Capitol Center for the Arts, so at the very least we know he likes singing Christmas songs in front of large groups of people.

Today is also World AIDS Day, and St. Paul Church is hosting a service of prayer, remembrance and hope at 5:30 p.m., featuring musical contributions from New Hampshire Gay Men’s Chorus and Cantor Shira Nafshi, and words from Dr. Gary Sobelson.
