Downhill From Here
Four days before they closed for the 2012-13 season, Cranmore had lots of sunshine and lots of snow on most of their trails. (Tim Jones/EasternSlopes.com photo)

Downhill From Here: Seeking the Kings of Spring, Part 2

Sunday, March 31, 2013

Now let me say right here that the ultimate King of Kings of Spring here in the Northeast was, is and forever will be Tuckerman Ravine on Mount Washington, where the skiing this year should easily last until the 4th of July. Of course, you have to hike to get your turns at Tucks, and any adventure there always comes with a risk of avalanches, falling ice and crevasses – any of which can kill you if you aren’t careful. Never head up to Tuckerman without reading and heeding the latest advisory from the Mount Washington Avalanche Center (mountwashingtonavalanchecenter.org). But mere mortals who prefer to …

Downhill from here: Winter’s late gasp provides spring thrill

Tuesday, March 26, 2013

I’ll admit it, when I first planned our annual “Kings of Spring” ski getaway, I’d envisioned day after day of warm spring sunshine and corn snow, people gathered on the decks at noontime, weekend afternoons watching silly season events between runs – all the joys of spring skiing. Exactly what we’d enjoyed at …

Downhill From Here: Silly season is upon us

Wednesday, March 20, 2013

I call it silly season. Every ski area in the East gets just a little crazy as the end of the season looms, perhaps to show the snow gods how much we are going to miss winter. Anyway, almost every ski hill entices folks to a last day on the slopes with friendly …

Downhill From Here: Whiteface in the sunshine

Tuesday, March 12, 2013

Any skier can tell you this: when you hit it just right, it feels like you live an absolutely charmed life. You absolutely wouldn’t want to be anywhere else, doing anything else. You wouldn’t change a thing. I …

Downhill From Here: Saddleback or Sugarloaf?

Tuesday, March 5, 2013

Last week, I told you that Feb. 24 at Saddleback (207-864-5671, saddlebackmaine.com) in Rangeley, Maine, was – for us at least – the best ski day of the 2012-13 season. In fact, it ranks high in the top …

Downhill From Here: Serious snow at Saddleback

Tuesday, February 26, 2013

Presidents’ Week is over! It’s been snowing somewhere in the Northeast every day for at least a week, there are two long-duration snowstorms in the forecast, the days are longer, the sun (when you can see it) is …

Downhill From Here: The best is yet to come

Tuesday, February 19, 2013

Presidents’ Week – in most years it’s the busiest ski week of the year. This year, with snow from the February blizzard still lingering, new snow falling along the coast as I write this and still more snow …

Downhill from here: Gore Mountain a jewel in upstate New York

Tuesday, February 12, 2013

You can tell a lot about a ski area by the base lodge. Some base lodges are warm and rustic, others are more efficient, even institutional. Some feel really commercial, while others are clearly for people who are …

Downhill From Here: Making the most of a Sunapee morning

Tuesday, January 22, 2013

MLK weekend is a long weekend for most folks and traditionally one of the busiest of the season for most ski resorts. A mid-week snowstorm had dropped enough snow on the cities to make people think about skiing …

Downhill From Here: It’s safety awareness week on the slopes

Tuesday, January 15, 2013

Did you ski this past weekend? If you did, at some point in your day you probably found yourself picking your way down a slope through thick fog. The clouds were hanging tough and low over much of …

Downhill From Here: A happily Ragged New Year

Monday, January 7, 2013

I’ve always said that New Year’s Day, or more specifically, Near Year’s Day morning, is one of the best days to ski for two reasons. First is the obvious reason that a large percent of the skiing and …

Tim Jones column: Mother Nature brings the best Christmas present ever!

Monday, December 31, 2012

You’d have to have been living under a rock to miss this. Mother Nature has been really kind to skiers and riders all across the Northeast, bringing us the gift of lots and lots of snow and cold …

Downhill From Here: Spend a holiday on the slopes

Monday, December 17, 2012

If you can tear yourself away from the holiday hustle, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are often among the best ski days of any season. Most people are “too busy” to hit the slopes, so you’ll rarely see …

Downhill From Here: Vermont's Okemo Mountain Resort is prime for early-season skiing

Sunday, December 9, 2012

Don’t let the bare ground fool you! Okemo Mountain had 28 trails open and was well covered with snow this past weekend. After you’ve skied all your legs can stand, Okemo lets you keep the adrenaline flowing with …
