UNH hockey schedule released; thoughts on the Wildcats’ slate

The UNH men’s hockey team released its full 2014-15 schedule Friday, and a few games and thoughts stand out: ∎ Opening against the champs: The Wildcats drew as tough an opponent for their opener as they could get. They’ll get the season started at Achilles Rink, home of defending national champion Union, which knocked off power after power en route to the program’s first title. UNH will hope for a better outcome than the teams’ two-game set last year, which resulted in a Dutchmen sweep at

Willows selected as captain for 2014-15 UNH hockey team

The 2014 University of New Hampshire men’s hockey team has its leader. Matt Willows was named the next Wildcats captain at the team’s hockey banquet yesterday, while rising seniors Casey Thrush and Grayson Downing will be alternate captains. The designation comes on the heels of a season in which Willows emerged as a vital cog in the UNH offense. The winger combined a hard, accurate shot with a hard-nosed style down low to develop into a pure scorer, setting career highs with 18 goals, 21

Bell brothers leaving Bishop Brady

According to a report on nhnotebook.com, Jourdain and Joseph Bell will be transferring from Bishop Brady to Lee (Me.) Academy. The Bell brothers led the Brady boys’ basketball team to a 14-6 record this year and a spot in the Division II quarterfinals. Jourdain, a junior, was named the D-II Player of the Year after averaging 24 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and five steals per game. Joe, a sophomore, was named to the D-II Second Team after averaging 18 points, seven rebounds, six steals

Quick thoughts: Patriots vs. Jets second quarter

Things turned ugly in the second quarter for both teams. New England shot itself in the foot with penalties (a false start from Nate Solder and a questionable holding on Logan Mankins), two dropped passes from Aaron Dobson, another field goal-only trip to the red zone and a missed field goal. With all the changes and injuries on offense for the Patriots, they can’t overcome mistakes and they will probably struggle for a while in the red zone. For now, things will have to run

Quick thoughts: Patriots vs. Jets first quarter

The big question going into the game against the Jets was how the Patriots wold make up for the loss of Danny Amendola and Shane Vereen. The answer came early – creative play design and calling. The obvious move would have been to lean on the running game early and often. Instead, New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels decided to come out slinging. The Patriots threw the ball five times and ran it twice on it’s first drive. They used shotgun, no huddle and a

UNH football: What To Watch For vs. Colgate

The stage is set for New Hampshire running back Nico Steriti to shine in Saturday’s football home opener against Colgate. The Raiders (0-2) allowed 747 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns on 111 carries in their first two games this year. Plus, Steriti’s two primary backups, Chris Setian and Jimmy Owens, will both miss the game due to knee injuries. Steriti, a 5-foot-11, 221-pound junior, led UNH last year with 921 rushing yards on 140 attempts. He gained 56 yards on 16 carries last week

UNH football home opener against Colgate

The University of New Hampshire football team is back where it likes to be – Cowell Stadium, a.k.a. The Dungeon. Since the start of the 2007 season, the Wildcats are 29-4 at home, and they’ll try to make it 30-4 when they face Colgate in the home opener on Saturday at noon. Both teams are coming off tough losses. No. 12/9 UNH (0-1) blew a 21-7 fourth-quarter lead at Central Michigan, an FBS team, and lost on a last-second field goal. Colgate rallied from a

Tom Brady and Rex Ryan press conference quotes

Here are some of the leftover highlights from the Tom Brady and Rex Ryan press conferences from Tuesday. ∎ Brady Q: Despite your dominance over the Jets recently, is it something special to play the Jets? TB: Yeah it is, and it’s awesome. I mean, it’s Boston-New York. It’s been that way for a long time, long before me, and any time you see them on the schedule you just think of all the great games that you’ve had against them and you think of how
