UNH hockey: Ideas for how the Wildcats can turn things around after a rough first half

The University of New Hampshire men’s hockey team is on its break, so with no game to preview for this weekend, it’s appropriate to take a look back at what’s happened to this point. In short: Oy vey. A dramatic 7-4 win road win over Maine eased what could have been serious holiday blues, but there’s no hiding the fact that the first half has been a disappointment for the Wildcats. Struggles this year were not unforeseen; with the losses UNH endured this past offseason, 0

UNH hockey: Keys for Wildcats in weekend series with Boston College

The University of New Hampshire hockey team is in desperate need of a spark, and normally this would be the last weekend it could expect to get one. Boston College isn’t what it’s been in recent years, however. The Eagles have won three national championships and four Hockey East titles since 2008, but are scuffling through a lukewarm season in which they are having trouble finding the net and playing at a .500 clip (7-7-0, 3-4-0). They’re ranked 17th in the country, but they’re not 0

UNH hockey: Highlights from team media availability heading into Northeastern series

The University of New Hampshire hockey team has a chance to climb back to .500 both overall and in Hockey East when it faces Northeastern in Durham tonight and in Boston tomorrow. The Wildcats are 3-5, with an 0-2 record in conference after losses to UMass Lowell, while the Huskies are still looking for their first win at 0-7-1 (0-3-1 in Hockey East). Here are a few tidbits from the midweek media conference from Coach Dick Umile and some of his players. ∎ Wildcats stress matching 0

UNH’s Spears makes the most of it

Harold Spears didn’t have a ton of catches or an amazing amount of receiving yards on Saturday, but he made the most of what he had. The first two receptions for the University of New Hampshire tight end were touchdowns, helping the Wildcats jump to a 16-0 lead that turned into a 53-23 win over visiting Colgate, and earning Spears the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) National Tight End Performer of the Week honors. Spears finished the game with five catches for 38 yards, and 0

Belichick quotes: Monday conference call highlights

He usually doesn’t disclose much when speaking to the media, but here are some of the more interesting quotes from Bill Belichick during his Monday conference call. Opening statement BB: We’ve turned the page here onto Tampa. Really, talk about a team that’s two plays away from being 2-0, that’s Tampa. They’ve been really close the last two weeks and have come up short but a couple plays that just turn out a little differently, wouldn’t have taken much, we’d be looking at a 2-0 0

Quick thoughts: Patriots vs. Jets second quarter

Things turned ugly in the second quarter for both teams. New England shot itself in the foot with penalties (a false start from Nate Solder and a questionable holding on Logan Mankins), two dropped passes from Aaron Dobson, another field goal-only trip to the red zone and a missed field goal. With all the changes and injuries on offense for the Patriots, they can’t overcome mistakes and they will probably struggle for a while in the red zone. For now, things will have to run 0

Quick thoughts: Patriots vs. Jets first quarter

The big question going into the game against the Jets was how the Patriots wold make up for the loss of Danny Amendola and Shane Vereen. The answer came early – creative play design and calling. The obvious move would have been to lean on the running game early and often. Instead, New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels decided to come out slinging. The Patriots threw the ball five times and ran it twice on it’s first drive. They used shotgun, no huddle and a 0

UNH football: What To Watch For vs. Colgate

The stage is set for New Hampshire running back Nico Steriti to shine in Saturday’s football home opener against Colgate. The Raiders (0-2) allowed 747 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns on 111 carries in their first two games this year. Plus, Steriti’s two primary backups, Chris Setian and Jimmy Owens, will both miss the game due to knee injuries. Steriti, a 5-foot-11, 221-pound junior, led UNH last year with 921 rushing yards on 140 attempts. He gained 56 yards on 16 carries last week 0

UNH football home opener against Colgate

The University of New Hampshire football team is back where it likes to be – Cowell Stadium, a.k.a. The Dungeon. Since the start of the 2007 season, the Wildcats are 29-4 at home, and they’ll try to make it 30-4 when they face Colgate in the home opener on Saturday at noon. Both teams are coming off tough losses. No. 12/9 UNH (0-1) blew a 21-7 fourth-quarter lead at Central Michigan, an FBS team, and lost on a last-second field goal. Colgate rallied from a 0

Tom Brady and Rex Ryan press conference quotes

Here are some of the leftover highlights from the Tom Brady and Rex Ryan press conferences from Tuesday. ∎ Brady Q: Despite your dominance over the Jets recently, is it something special to play the Jets? TB: Yeah it is, and it’s awesome. I mean, it’s Boston-New York. It’s been that way for a long time, long before me, and any time you see them on the schedule you just think of all the great games that you’ve had against them and you think of how 1
