....about more and more people who have chronic pain from any number of causes, including nerve damage, who are prescribed oxycontin and percocet and other pain killers to use at the same time, in dosages which would make them zombies. They have all come to use marijuana over time, and reduced by two-thirds the number of pills they take. I have no reason not to believe them when they can manage their pain and still function. There has to be something significantly beneficial, and objectively measurable, about the devil weed (though perhaps not to the drug companies).

If life is sacred, which is a platitude the most righties mouth reverently when discussing SOMEBODY ELSE's desire to have an abortion, then the lives of the poor, and the near-poor, and the working poor, and the middle class, and all the others who "do not contribute" by way of taxes must be sacred, too. All consumers pay taxes -- from direct sales tax to higher prices on goods so that the seller can pay their property taxes; gasoline taxes; cigarette taxes, etc. But more importantly, those who "do not contribute" in fact contribute to the people around them in countless ways. Even the poorest and most dependent among us nonetheless enrich the lives of those around them; inspire them; ground them in family and citizenship. We used to know this as an American value. The bigger point is that those who make lots of money in this society have an obligation to pay for the environment in which they prospered -- infastructure, police/fire services, garbage pickup, and on and on. The more anyone makes, the more they should pay. How is that not fair? And we have our elected, representative government to determine how to distribute the funds on our behalf. That is America. And to answer one commentator's rhetorical question, YES we have billionaires sitting on piles of money counting it, defending it, and keeping it from the nation that helped them become rich.

....Thanks for making a point about bullying and the damage it causes, and how it might be mitigated. Unfortunately, the talking-point-spewing one-note wonders on this site did not get your point at all. I assure you that for every one of them, there are scores of readers who understood and appreciate your work.

....has not been completed yet. It is decades of struggle, and thanks to petty and mean-spirited anti-Americans, more struggle awaits. His is a life of service, not of sitting on the sidelines complaining in ignorance and fear. His is a legacy beyond the meager comprehension of those.

Mr. Bonneville's letter is right on the money. And on everything else. You cannot say it often enough -- the Ryan budget and the Teapublican plan for America are morally bankrupt and financially disastrous. They do not represent the real America, nor should they.
