Work Detail | Body Part Storage

League of NH Craftsmen building
A pair of mannequin legs stick out from beneath a heap of boxes in a storage barn in the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen's building on South Main Street in Concord on Wednesday, May 4, 2011.Purchase photo reprints at PhotoExtra »

I tend to gravitate toward the strange side of things when it comes to photography.  I've always been a sucker for mannequins, abandoned spaces, and finding small things that I think most people wouldn't ordinarily notice.  I found this bizarre scene in one of the storage areas of the League of Craftsmen headquarters in downtown Concord.  The building will likely be demolished.

A quick portrait of a bystander at a pickup basketball game last week.  I loved the fence shadow on his face.

Work Detail | Easter Bunny Anxiety

Easter Bunny Scare
Maeve Owens, 2, is upset about seeing the Easter bunny as her mom, Elisa Owens, stands behind her in line during the Easter egg hunt and visit with the Easter bunny on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at Hopkinton High School.Purchase photo reprints at PhotoExtra »

This picture just breaks my heart.  I was assigned to photograph an Easter egg hunt and meet and greet with the Easter bunny at the Hopkinton High School last Sunday.  I couldn't believe the number of kids who were absolutely terrified of the Easter bunny!  Although, upon further inspection, it was understandable.  A giant white bunny who doesn't talk, and constantly carries the same wide-eyed and uber-happy demeaner?  I could see how it would appear fairly confusing to the kids.

Just a pretty picture I found while looking around for scenic images a few weeks ago.

Work Detail | Making Meetings Interesting

Mark Barker
Mark Barker with Interfaith Voices stands outside of the Senate Finance Committee meeting to witness the legislature in action at the State House to discuss the budget on Wednesday, April 6, 2011.  "I view it [social services cuts in the budget] as being un-Christian.  It's just about the complete opposite of what Jesus taught us," said Barker.

Sometimes it's difficult to find interesting pictures from meetings.  I found this man peering into a meeting for members of the Senate Finance Committee to discuss the current budget, and thought it would make a prettier picture than Senators reading the proposed budget document.

I always try to photograph anything that I find interesting while on assignment, even if I don't think it will make it to the newspaper.  Some photographers refer to these kinds of pictures as, "for themselves."  Often, editors and teachers will tell you that these are the kinds of pictures that keep you going as a photographer; they keep you motivated.  I've always agreed.  And luckily, I work for a newspaper that runs my obscure visions on occasion.  This one however, seemed better suited to the blog.  :)

I spotted this detail photo at the Open Hands Resource Center for the homeless on Friday morning.  I felt like it juxtaposed an imaginary paradise world with reality.

Work Detail | Peek-a-boo

Peek-a-boo
Alyssa Albert, right, looks through a hole in the barn wall with her son Tucker, 1, to get a closer peek at the cows at Windswept Maples Farm in Loudon during a maple sugaring open house event on Sunday, March 20, 2011.  This weekend, maple sugaring houses throughout New Hampshire  opened their doors to the public, handing out samples of maple syrup, candies, and other syrup products.  Windswept Maples Farm also offered tours of the farm to meet the animals.Purchase photo reprints at PhotoExtra »

While photographing a maple syrup open house, I was drawn to the farm animals in a barn near the sugar house.  I found this sweet moment of a mom and son peering through a tiny hole in the barn wall to spy on the cows below.

I went in search of pretty light during a heavy fog in Northwood last week.  I thought this looked like a butterfly.
