Police in Allenstown are looking for a burglar who was caught on tape wearing a “Zorro-type mask” while stealing from a School Street home on Monday.

The man, who is believed to be between 40 and 60 years old, entered an unlocked door, took a purse and fled about 2 a.m., according to a press release issued Monday.

But he didn’t escape before his image – complete with the black mask worn around the eyes by pulp fiction heroes such as Zorro and the Lone Ranger – was captured by the home’s security system camera.

“It's more like a Lone Ranger's mask that you could buy in a costume store or something like that,” Chief Paul Paquette said in an interview Tuesday.

He’s also seen wearing pale blue gloves and a matching jacket. Paquette said his department has received tips about the suspect’s identity but hasn’t made any arrests. The man also appears to have gray-white hair or be wearing a bandana of that color on his head.

Police were patrolling nearby at the time the homeowner reported the burglary, but they didn’t catch sight of the man, the chief said. They did, however, recover some of the items from the purse, apparently discarded by the man as he made his getaway.

“We don’t believe he got away with anything,” Paquette said.

The incident took place about midway through School Street, the chief said. The home wasn’t locked, which prompted Paquette to remind residents to keep their houses closed to prevent issues such as this.

“This day and age, some people think they can still leave their doors open, and you just can’t, no matter where you are as far as I’m concerned,” he said.
