D-III Boys’ Basketball

No. 4 Hopkinton 68, No. 5 Winnisquam 50

Key players: Hopkinton – Kevin Newton-Delgado (21 points), Shepyrd Murdough (16 points), Luke Reidy (12 points), Owen Milchick (12 points); Winnisquam – Phil Nichols (21 points), Anthony Robbins (14 points)

Highlights: The Hawks went up early and used a strong defense that held Winnisquam to one-shot opportunities while the Hawks had extending sets on offense with offensive rebounds and put backs. Hopkinton led by 18 points heading into the fourth quarter on Friday night and held that margin as the Hawks advanced to Monday’s semifinal against top-ranked Gilford. Reidy, Newton-Delgado and Milchick were too much inside for Winnisquam while Murdough controlled the offense by creating offensive opportunities for the rest of the team.

Coach’s quote: “The boys stuck to the game plan of creating a strong inside presence and focusing on keeping the shooters from Winnisquam at bay with only five made 3s in the first three quarters. Some of our guys really stepped up big with four guys in double figures. I want to congratulate Winnisquam and coach (Kevin) Dame for a great season. I know he will have them back near the top of the division next year as he has almost his whole team back.” – Hopkinton’s Stephen Signor

Records: Hopkinton 16-4; Winnisquam 14-6
