Letter: Harry Reid is the problem

Published: 5/8/2021 8:00:33 AM

I have been and continue to be a supporter of our Secretary of State. His integrity has been beyond reproach. Under his leadership tens of millions of dollars of funding was returned to municipalities as a result of the local government center’s misuse of taxpayer money. This doesn’t mean that I always agree with Secretary Gardner, as I don’t share his concerns regarding H.R. 1. And while I do not believe it is a perfect bill and New Hampshire has some the highest voter turnout in the country, there is always room for improvement. Both in H.R.1 and our election process.

I do not believe that H.R. 1 will impact our first in the nation status. The real threat to our first in the nation status comes from Harry Reid, the former Senate Majority Leader from Nevada. The same person who opened the Pandora's box that lead to requiring only a simple majority vote to confirm members of the Supreme Court, resulting in the current make up of the Supreme Court. Reid is making a power grab to move the first in the nation primary to Nevada. Not because the current calendar isn’t working, but because he wants Nevada to have more political clout. So let’s keep our eye on the ball. Could and should H.R. 1 be amended, yes. But I don’t believe it is H.R. 1 that imposes the threat to losing our first in the nation status.
