Letter: Our democracy is at risk

The rights of American citizens are being eroded and are in danger of disappearing. Once our rights are gone it would take an act of Congress to get them back, and they can’t agree on much. An important right and privilege that is in great danger is our collective voices in all government issues. I don’t want anyone, even the secretary of state, to have the authority to cancel out my vote just because they don’t like the outcome of that election. I have the intellect to make medical decisions about my body. I don’t want anyone, but my husband and I, to decide when we’re ready to start a family.

I resent the fact that any government feels they have the right to treat me as an incubator and having control of my reproductive system. If I had a high risk pregnancy and my life was in danger I should have the right to choose to terminate this death sentence. I should also have the choice to terminate any pregnancy as a result of incest or rape. If I’m forced to carry a pregnancy that I can’t afford how will this child get healthcare? Will you individual states step up to help care for these children? With the conservative desire to outlaw abortion and birth control the cost states incur will be staggering. If conservatives are concerned about the preservation of life then why do they continue to allow deaths due to lack of common sense gun laws?
