Letter: Sununu, Kuster climate contrast

The article “Traction in the Snow” (Monitor, 12/26) regarding Rep. Annie Kuster’s skiing and her father’s role as being one of the cofounders of Wildcat Ski Area shared similarities with Gov. Sununu. The Sununu family purchased Waterville Valley in 2010, and he previously served there as CEO. They both have enjoyed skiing with their children. Both realize that skiing is important to the economy of our state. Here the similarities end. Annie has joined with a Republican congressman from UT to co-chair a “Bipartisan Ski & Snowboard” caucus that recognizes that climate change is having negative impacts on winter sports.

Sununu is touting the Republican stance on climate change, minimizing its effects and our role either in causing it or providing solutions. By doing this, he benefits from contributions and endorsements from the fossil fuel industry and their multitude of conservative-funded organizations. It is apparent that Annie cares about the future, not just for her childrens’ ability to continue skiing, but for our collective future. Sununu is guilty of short-term, egotistical thinking, “What will help me in my position now?” For the sake of his children and all our collective progeny, he should face reality and facilitate statewide decisions to minimize climate change impacts.
