Letter: Truth ought to matter

The following quote by Robin Winks is from the introduction to his book entitled, “The Historian as Detective: Essays on Evidence,” “Someone ought to be interested in finding out the truth about things, for the truth ought to matter.” Like History Professor Winks, I want to believe the truth is worth searching for! As a U.S. History teacher for many years, I posed questions to my students in relation to major events in history. Was the Gulf of Tonkin incident in 1964 just a fabrication that LBJ wanted in order to justify sending U.S. combat troops to Vietnam? Did Nixon in 1972 give the order to break into the Democratic Headquarters at the Watergate Complex?

Today, as a retired teacher and a grandfather of three, I am especially interested in questions involving major current events that would affect my growing grandchildren. On the top of that list is whether Trump as president aided and abetted the actions of others on January 6, 2021, to stop the Electoral College count? As always, I hope the truth will come out, the sooner the better.
