Letter: The NH primary and the lurking nightmare

General Mark Milley has his own security because Donald Trump suggested he should be executed for treason. Mitt Romney has done the same, as have many others. Judges get death threats. Our country has become a place where people need protection from a former president’s followers. What scares me more is that if Trump gets another term, private security won’t be enough. Trump promises in his posts and speeches to weaponize the Department of Justice and bring “retribution” to his critics. He’s tried it before.

During his presidency, he wanted the DOJ to arrest Joe Biden. It did not happen because the professionals in the department resisted. But if Trump gets back in there will only be loyalists. He tells us this in his posts and speeches. Trump summoned a mob to the Capitol to overturn the results of the last election. He’s already planning for his next term, when he can pardon them. Moreover, he’ll have his people in place and won’t even need a mob. I don’t believe my New Hampshire neighbors want a country like that. I believe that the New Hampshire Republican primary can be the beginning of the end of this lurking nightmare.
