Merrimack countryCancer incident rates report

Cancer incidence rates in Merrimack are consistent with the rest of the state, according to a report released by the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health Services. The report was produced based on concerns in the Merrimack community about potential health effects of environmental exposures. The report is intended to provide a broad view of cancer incidence rates in Merrimack, and information about what is currently known about perfluorochemical (PFC) association with different types of cancer. Using data from the New Hampshire Cancer Registry, DPHS officials examined incidence rates for 26 different types of cancer over a 10 year span. The report was written in response to public concerns related to detection of low levels of perfluorooctanic acid (PFOA) in the Merrimack Village District public water supply and possible health impacts. A few types of cancer, including kidney, testicular, and prostate cancer, have been found in some scientific studies to potentially be related to PFC exposure. The science around cancers, PFC exposure and other health and environmental concerns can evolve from one year to the next. DPHS will continue to monitor rates of cancer in Merrimack and share any new developments with Merrimack residents and local and state officials. The full report on Merrimack Cancer Incidence Report can be read at dhhs.nh.gov/dphs.
