On Feb. 2, the Inter-Lakes High School Service Club hosted guest speaker Jeanine Mukarubega, who is a survivor of the Rwandan genocide.
Mukarubega told the students about events leading up to the genocide, the 100 days that killed almost 900,000 Rwandans and the aftermath that still affects the country today.
Mukarubega has a passion to help those still affected and rebuilding in Rwanda. She started the Rwanda Childrenโs Education Foundation to help families get micro-loans so they can provide health insurance and an education to their children.
Last weekend, the Interact Club will volunteer at the Rotary Fishing Derby and fundraise for the Rwanda Childrenโs Education Fund and other local nonprofits, such as the Got Lunch! Program.
