The top seed tumbled, low seeds advanced and three local golfers made it through the round of 16 at the 119th New Hampshire State Amateur Championship at Abenaqui Country Club on Thursday.

New London’s Rob Henley (Lake Sunapee CC) – the No. 1 seed – fell in the round of 32 to No. 33 Will Ducharme of Stratham (GC of New England).

Ducharme’s upset was short lived, as he lost to Belmont’s Jim Cilley (Laconia CC) in a narrow match, 1 up, in the round of 16. Cilley – the No. 48 seed – is the lowest seed remaining in the quarterfinals. He upset No. 16 Jon Dyer (Nashua CC), 5 and 4, in the round of 32.

Concord’s Joe Bowker (Pembroke Pines) and Mark Stevens (Beaver Meadow) also both made it through to the quarterfinals. No. 8 Stevens – the 2008 champion and former pro – defeated No. 25 Tony Fournier (Portmouth CC) and No. 24 Jamie Ferullo (Rochester CC) in the rounds of 32 and 16, respectively, by 7-and-6 and 1-up scores.

No. 5 Bowker – who was the first-ever John Stark Regional High School golfer to qualify for the NHIAA individual state tournament back in 2011 – topped No. 28 John DeVito (Passaconaway CC), 6 and 4, and No. 24 James Kinnunen (Shattuck GC), 5 and 4.

Cilley – the 2011 state am champion – and Stevens will tee off against each other in the first quarterfinal match on Friday morning, while Bowker will take on Dover’s Brett Wilson, the No. 29 seed out of Golf Club of New England.

The bottom half of the bracket includes No. 2 Ryan Kohler (Hooper GC), while the other round of 16 matches in the bottom half were not completed at press time. No. 3 Craig Steckowych (Portsmouth CC), No. 6 Brandon Gillis (Sky Meadow) and two-time defending champion No. 11 James Pleat (Nashua CC) were still competing in their round of 16 matches.

Gilford’s Patrick Hesseltine (Laconia CC, No. 52) fell to Wilson (7 and 6) in the round of 16 after defeating No. 45 Aiden Azevedo (Atkinson CC) earlier in the day, 5 and 4.

Bishop Brady graduate Fletcher Sokul – the seventh seed – dropped his Round of 32 match to No. 39 Derek Dinwiddie (Farmington CC), 1 up.

The quarterfinal and semifinal matches will be played on Friday, while a 36-hole championship match will crown the 119th State Amateur champion on Saturday morning.
