GERMAN FOOD is hitting the road. Bob and Alex Graf are taking the hearty Austro-German fare of their Danbury restaurant, the Alphorn Bistro at the Inn at Danbury, straight to the people with a new food wagon.

The couple picked up their brand-new 'SCHNITZels & GIGGLES' wagon Friday in Florida and began driving it up to New Hampshire. It's slated to have its signs installed today and will make its first appearance Wednesday at the Cheshire Fair in Swanzey.

'We never thought we'd be carnies, but I guess it's the new life,' Alex Graf said Friday in an interview from the road. 'The way the restaurant industry has been so slow . . . we said, 'Let's see if we can break into this (mobile-food) industry.' '

The Grafs plan to sell schnitzel, bratwurst and other traditional German foods at various fairs throughout the state into the fall and then evaluate where else they can break into the mobile-food trade.

'It helps to have a reputation for amazing food,' Graf said.

The wagon will have a mascot. The design isn't final, but 'we're kind of leaning toward Captain Bratwurst right now,' she said.
