'On climate change, quite a contrast'

I am struck by the contrast between the views of the two presidential candidates on the issue of climate change.

Mitt Romney said: 'President Obama promised to slow the rise of the oceans (Sneer and roll eyes drawing laughter from the crowd) and to heal the planet. (More laughter.) My promise . . . is to help you and your family.'

President Obama said: 'And yes, my plan will continue to reduce the carbon pollution that is heating our planet, because climate change is not a hoax. More droughts and floods and wildfires are not a joke. (Cheers and applause.) They are a threat to our children's future.'

As someone trained in science, I have followed the trend of the earth's warming since 1965. The research has grown more comprehensive and the evidence stronger. Now 98 percent of all publishing climatologists are in agreement that climate change is caused by carbon dioxide and other pollutants in the atmosphere, and that they are produced primarily by human activity. Global warming causing the climate disruptions we are experiencing is real. Addressing the climate crisis would help our families, now and in the future.

I am a concerned volunteer trained by Climate Reality Project to educate people on this topic, and I welcome opportunities to speak to groups about climate change, its impact and what we can do about it. Contact me at jhmcelroy@tds.net.
