Water rates in Hillsboro to increase 15 percent in November

Hillsboro’s water and sewer commissioners have voted to raise water rates by 15 percent for all users, starting next month, according to a news release from the town.

The water bill for a base user who consumes up to 7,500 gallons per quarter will increase from $58.85 to $68 per quarter.

Total revenue from billings for the last four quarters was $590,242, almost $90,000 less than the 2012 budget of $678,810, according to the release.

Commissioner Herman Wiegelman said in the release that the rate increase will not make up the entire difference, which he attributed in part to a large number of vacant properties, 55 at last count, on the municipal water system.
