Letter: I have a better plan for downtown cyclists

With all due respect to my fellow bicyclists, I don’t understand why you want bike lanes on Main Street.

Main Street is for pedestrians (hopefully), and no matter how you mark the lanes, they are going to get in the way. If you want to avoid hitting that stroller, you are going to have to stop and start and get off the bike, or bicycle so slowly you might as well be walking. If we must have bike lanes (and I think they are overrated anyway), put them on State Street or Green Street. It’s only a block or two out of the way, and then you make a turn, cycle to Main Street, get off your bike, walk and shop like everybody else.

What bicycles really need, like motorists, is parking.

Provide us a sheltered bike rack or two, instead of one or two parking spaces (or on the sidewalk if you must), and Main Street becomes a destination, not a place to race through at 15-20 miles an hour. (A locker for helmets and gloves, perhaps a water fountain with a faucet to fill water bottles, would be amazing).

That way you don’t have to go into contortions to figure out how to get an extra 5 feet of space into the redesign.
