Letter: High-pressure techniques from military recruiters

Last modified: 5/23/2013 10:49:04 AM
The efforts of military recruiters have gone too far. I am a student at Concord High School and recently witnessed two recruiters bringing motorcycles onto the campus to attract more attention from my fellow students. You can always find a recruiter talking about the opportunities and rewards that come with joining, but you never hear about the realities of conflict and the effects it has when you get home.

During these conversations students are being lied to, deceived and manipulated. Don’t get me wrong: I support veterans and troops 100 percent. I even come from a family with veterans. I just don’t believe that these manipulation techniques being used on teenagers is acceptable. If students want to join the military, they will come and find you.

Teenagers are vulnerable and may make decisions because they feel pressured. Using the vulnerability of teenagers to further your career is wrong and should not be allowed to occur on our school campus.
