Letter: No real need for BearCat

The quarter-million-dollar BearCat being discussed for Concord has no legitimate purpose in New Hampshire.

The two I’ve seen, in Keene and Manchester, are white elephants rolled out for the cameras at opportune times but otherwise sit under their tents and rust. Having his own tank is nothing but an ego trip for Chief John Duval, whose application described the residents of New Hampshire as domestic terrorists for which he needs armor plating to feel safe from “daily challenges.” I had no idea that sidewalk chalk was such a threat to the Concord police.

Everything beneficial to the residents of New Hampshire that this BearCat might accomplish can be better done by a four-wheel-drive pickup truck at a small fraction of the cost. But Duval isn’t spending his own money, is he?
