Letter: Hassan strong on civil rights

Voters have a very important choice to make in the race for governor between Gov. Maggie Hassan and Walt Havenstein.

I believe the choice is clear. Hassan deserves a second term for a variety of reasons. During her first term, she helped advance civil rights for all people in the state of New Hampshire. Hassan signed Senate Bill 394, which ensured that loving, married, same-sex couples in the state of New Hampshire are afforded every right that New Hampshire citizens enjoy. The bill also ensures that if a couple is married outside of New Hampshire and they move to New Hampshire, their marriage will be recognized.

It’s also critical that we have a governor who will expand civil rights to transgender citizens, and I believe Maggie Hassan is a leader who can do it.

Hassan also signed New Hampshire’s pay equity law, ensuring that women who perform the same jobs as men are paid fairly.

In addition to Hassan’s leadership on civil rights, she has also made a significant mark on education. As a freshman at UNH, I am extremely grateful that she helped restore our university funding and froze in-state tuition. That has been a huge help to my family as we pay for my education.

I believe Havenstein is a fine man with a good heart, but Hassan deserves a second term in office.
