Letter: Benefits of spirituality

Thanks for the recent article about New Hampshire Hospital Chaplain Rachael Keefe (Monitor front page, Jan. 5).

Her remarks and experience showing how spirituality and spiritual care help bring healing to patients with mental illness are of interest to me. I recently read a paper by Dr. Harold Koenig titled “The Spiritual Care Team: Enabling the Practice of Whole Person Medicine,” which brings out similar points advocated by Keefe.

Koenig also has other research articles on his website showing the benefits of spirituality in healing the sick. Christians strive to follow Jesus in all that he did, and he healed mental illness through prayer and spirituality. The Bible says, “God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” (II Timothy 1:7)

Over a century ago, Concord’s Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science, taught that we regain and maintain our mental health as we pray to understand and practice the First Commandment to have one God – the Mind that is divine Love, which is caring for all of us. She wrote, “Our system of Mind-healing rests on the apprehension of the nature and essence of all being – on the divine Mind and Love’s essential qualities. Its pharmacy is moral, and its medicine is intellectual and spiritual, though used for physical healing.”

Turning to the spiritual helps bring peace of mind and sound mental health.
