Letter: United in imperialism

Last modified: 11/12/2015 6:27:03 AM
Bernie Sanders is a marvelous orator, full of passion and conviction. Bernie, like Obama and Hillary, supports the U.S./Israel genocide in Palestine and more war in Afghanistan. Voting for any of the candidates is voting for The American Empire: endless war, genocide in Palestine, support of horrible dictators, drones, 800 military bases the world over.

I have always accepted the lesser evil, voting so that the worse guy wouldn’t win. Our last better-than-the other-guy won, and we got endless war, poverty, racism, out-of-control militarized cops, a dysfunctional economy, war on women. The same traveling circuses come and go, the same primary contestants and the same banal news coverage.

Trump leads the Republicans and is well suited to be the American leader. He is America. A loudmouth, a braggart, a bully, a millionaire. Ben Carson will make a fine VP. A lot of Americans think as he does. Last time around we elected a liberal and now the world hates us even more than when Bush was president.

American imperialism thrives among Democrats, Republicans, “liberals” and “conservatives” who find common cause in empirical ambition. Humanitarians act to save foreigners from tyranny, resulting in civilian casualties, devastated infrastructure, lawlessness and exploitation. Those who manage empire will never build a country free of exploitation and injustice. Human beings can be redeemed. Empires cannot.

Our refusal to face the truth about empire, our refusal to defy the multitudinous crimes and atrocities of empire, has brought about a nightmare. And it’s going to get worse.
