An Alton man is recovering from serious injuries after his GMC van was hit by Chevrolet Impala that police say crossed the centerline on Route 28 in Barnstead on Tuesday.

Thomas Garrity, 51, suffered life-threatening injuries after being ejected from the van and was transported to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

The driver of the Impala, Brian McKay, 34, of Pittsfield, was transported to Concord Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and released.

Police said McKay was driving north on Route 28 about 5:30 p.m. when his car crossed the center line and hit the side of Garrity’s van that was headed south. The road was closed for about five hours, and traffic was diverted around the crash scene.

Pittsfield police, covering for the Barnstead Police Department, were the first to respond. Police and fire personnel from Barnstead, Pittsfield and Gilmanton responded to the call. State police and its collision analysis and reconstruction unit also responded.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Sgt. David McCormack at 225-8583.
