Belmont police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man accused of looking under a bathroom stall used by a child Monday afternoon at the Belknap Mall.

A father reported to police that his son had been in the men’s restroom when an unidentified man “peeked under the stall,” knowing the child was inside, Belmont police Capt. Richard Mann said Wednesday. The child immediately told his father about the incident and the father notified police.

“We are very concerned about this matter and officers are seeking assistance from anyone who may have been in the mall Monday the 16th around 4:30 - 4:45 p.m.,” Mann wrote in a statement. “The same male was also observed watching kids in the mall play area.”

Police said the child’s family observed the man watching two 10- and 11-year-old girls in the kids play area of the mall.

Officers searched the mall, but did not find the man. They have also reviewed video surveillance footage as part of their investigation.

“In this event no children were touched but our concern obviously is the possibility exists for these events to escalate,” Mann wrote.

Police said they are aware of a similar violation of privacy Sunday at the Tanger Outlet Mall, but said they believe the two incidents are not related. Tilton police charged Eric Muldowney, 30, of Somerville, Mass., with violation of privacy and simple assault after they say he peered at a 12-year-old girl at an outlet store dressing room.

Anyone with information about Monday’s incident in Belmont is asked to contact police at 267-8350.
