Gilmanton Two-boat crash under investigation

Police are investigating a crash between two boats following a fireworks show on Crystal Lake in Gilmanton on Saturday night.

As boats were exiting the area of Crystal Lake Park about 10:05 p.m., a 17-foot Key West power boat was heading north when another power boat rode up onto it from behind.

Richard Downing, 62, of Manchester, Conn., was bringing his 19-foot Crestliner to planing speed when it struck the Key West, which was moving at headway speed.

Nancy Renall, 62, of Gilmanton, was driving the Key West with four passengers on board. Downing was also traveling with four passengers.

Two passengers on Downing’s boat were thrown into the water during the crash, while passengers on the Key West were struck by the hull of the Crestliner.

Passengers from both boats were transported to area hospitals for facial trauma and possible internal injuries, police said.

The Key West and Crestliner sustained extensive damage. Police say drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash.

Marine Patrol is urging boaters to use extra caution at night and to be vigilant of other boaters’ navigation lights.

Police ask anyone with information on the crash to contact Marine Patrol at 293-2037.
