An 8-year-old boy is going to be honored for grabbing his baby sister during a fire at the family’s barn and calling 911.

Fire Marshal Bill Degnan said Harrison Holt of Milan was told by his father on July 23 that he needed help. Harrison got his sister and the phone before running outside to an oak tree. That’s where his parents taught him and his 5-year-old brother to go in case of an emergency. From there, Harrison called 911.

When the fire department arrived, the fire had spread to the house. It took firefighters seven hours to extinguish the fire.

Degnan said without Harrison’s fast and calm actions, the outcome could’ve been worse.

Harrison’s scheduled to receive the State Fire Marshal’s Award of Excellence in Fire & Life Safety at the Milan Fire Department on Thursday.
