How lucky we are – the happily-retired, still-active and engaged population over age 50. And let’s face it, these are the majority of OLLI at Granite State College members. Which explains why a review of the course catalog for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute traditionally reveals classes on weekday mornings and afternoons.

But the quality and variety of OLLI courses has attracted the attention of our colleagues who are still in the working world and they have asked for a way to participate. So the volunteers who organize the course offerings have concentrated on making classes available on a few weekend days and early evenings.

Four of the next five Saturdays have classes available and they are varied indeed. A four-week course on pastel painting, tours of the Molly Stark House and the Miles Smith Farm, crafting (bookbinding and needle-felting) and a class on 1960s and ’70s rock music featuring a live band are open for registration. Open to both members (at a discount) and nonmembers, the courses are described fully on the OLLI website,

Two evening classes are also available during the next four weeks: “Gilmanton’s Hotels and Boarding Houses” and “The Art of Brewing Kombucha,” and have 7 and 6 p.m. start times respectively.

OLLI’s annual meeting also comes up on Sept. 26 at which members come together from all four learning sites (Concord, Manchester, Seacoast and Conway) to celebrate the year and receive the annual report.

What’s to celebrate? An ever-increasing number of classes and the fact that 527 volunteers, nearly half the membership, work on the educational and social offerings that make OLLI so attractive to seniors in New Hampshire.

OLLI at Granite State College offers non-college, non-credit courses ranging from single sessions to six-week sessions for adults over age 50. For more information, visit
