The administrative churn at SAU 53 continues, but the districts will see the return of a familiar face.

David Ryan, who was hired last spring as the superintendent overseeing Allenstown, Chichester and Epsom, will depart at the end of the year for SAU 16 in Exeter. Peter Warburton, SAU 53’s former superintendent, has agreed to return and signed a three-year contract, according to Ryan.

“I’m sad to be leaving SAU 53 after one year – it’s not really my style,” Ryan said.

That Warburton accepted a three-year contract was “fantastic,” he said.

“That helped lift some of the guilt that I’ve been carrying around,” Ryan said.

Ryan said he hadn’t originally applied for the post, but then reached out after SAU 16 in January rejected their finalist in their superintendent search.

Working in Exeter, Ryan said, had been a “longtime goal.”

“SAU 16’s always been a district with colleagues and friends,” he said.

He met with a subcommittee of SAU 16’s board in February, Ryan said, and notified SAU 53 school officials at that time. He beat out an internal candidate and was officially picked in early March, according to news reports.

Warburton is currently the superintendent for SAU 39, which includes Amherst, Mont Vernon and the Souhegan Cooperative school districts. He was superintendent of SAU 53 from 2008 to 2011. He has been at SAU 39 in the seven years since.

Warburton has four decades of experience in education, according to a statement released by SAU 53. He has been a teacher, assistant principal, athletic director, principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent. He sits on the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts.

“SAU 53 has always put student achievement and success both academically and in life as its first priority, and that is certainly a philosophy I share and look forward to helping continue,” Warburton said in a statement.

Deerfield, Pembroke and central office SAU functions will continue to be overseen by Patty Sherman, the other superintendent in SAU 53.
