A piece of history

I couldn’t agree more with Jonathan Harris and his view of the Employment Security building on South Main Street (Monitor Forum, Jan. 6).

He suggests that preserving the facade would allow the city to retain some of its architectural history. Styles come and go, and there is always a period where the style is reviled and then, often much later, embraced as a sort of time capsule.

Concord has all too often been quick to tear down with no regard of the history being demolished in the process. Yes, it’s ugly to you and to me, but, and that’s a big but, we cannot change the normal timelines for these things and there will, believe it or not, be a time when the removal of all buildings from that period will be seen as the mistake that it is.

Concord, just once, take the historical road to preservation and it will, in time, pay off with the diversity of buildings you have retained.
