A Franklin man has been sentenced to 50 years in federal prison for producing child sexual abuse images.

Brad Smith, 33, was previously found guilty on six counts of the felony charge after a three-day jury trial in U.S. District Court in Concord in April.

Law enforcement officials in Lafayette, La., received a tip in January 2006 that an email address associated with Smith was distributing child sexual abuse images, the U.S. Attorney’s office said. Investigators traced that email address to a farm in Breux Bridge, La., where Smith was then living.

Authorities said they seized a hard drive from the home and uncovered a series of videos, including films of Smith engaging in multiple sexual acts with a 3½-year-old child in Loudon.

Acting United States Attorney John Farley said in a statement that Smith’s sentence demonstrates that “this community will not tolerate the horrific acts that the defendant committed against a defenseless young child.” He said that he hopes the resolution of the criminal case provides “some comfort to the victim’s family.”

Homeland Security Investigations led the investigation and was assisted by several state agencies from New Hampshire and Louisiana, officials said.
