Letter: GOP hypocrisy on impeachment

When you look in the future dictionary for the word “hypocrisy,” the picture of an elephant should appear – the symbol of what was once a Grand Old Party. The image will be included to remind Americans of the neck-breaking reversal of most Republicans on the issue of impeachment in just two decades.

Here’s Sen. Mitch McConnell, the man with his hand on the conviction lever today: 1999 – “The president would seek to win at any cost. If it meant lying to the American people. If it meant lying to his Cabinet. The name of the game was winning. Winning at any cost.” Today – “I’ve read the summary of the call. If this is the ‘launching point’ for House Democrats’ impeachment process, they’ve already overplayed their hand. It’s clear there is no quid pro quo that the Democrats were desperately praying for.”

Lindsey Graham and a host of others in office for both impeachments are even more biased. Mind you, the Clinton impeachment was over the petty issue of lying about an extramarital affair. Today’s inquiry is about national security: a president using military aid to bribe a foreign leader into digging up dirt on his political opponent.

It is not likely these deplorable hypocrites will see the dangers posed by a maniacal narcissist as their principled counter parts did during the Nixon impeachment prompting Nixon’s resignation. Consequently, it will be up to the American people to complete the process of purging all of Trump’s lackeys from government in 2020.
